This was my fifth expedition to the mountains of the north. It was a college project aimed at highlighting the beauty of Kashmir beyond its troubled public persona that brought he here. From my house boat, I wondered at the beauty of the sarovar around me – the crystal clear waters, luscious green trees, fresh mountain air. The beauty brought tears to my eyes. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, away from readymade routines. “Children sparkle in the lap of nature — amidst vales, rivulets and crickets,” he had shared in one of his letters. Named after his favourite Tagore character, Chitrangada, she felt pressured to become someone she was not. While daddy read Ajoba’s letter, she thought to herself, “I am not a warrior princess like Chitrangada. I am me.” But who’s she? For days and months, the question kept popping up. She had instructed her mind to keep it under wraps, in the corridors of confusion. But minds were never meant to be obedient.
